will the Canadian countermeasure tariffs affect you?

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Adhesives, News

It’s coming:  The Department of Finance Canada has issued its notice of intent to impose countermeasures in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum products.

On June 1, 2018, the Department of Finance Canada issued a list of countermeasure tariffs which will take effect on July 1, 2018.  These countermeasures targeted a wide range of products which include (obviously) steel and aluminum but also include stainless steel, food products (stock up on ketchup), paper and wood products, household goods, and some types of appliances.

Where the new tariffs affect us (and our customers) is in the area of adhesives in small package sizes:
"HS Code 3506.10.xx.xx:  Products suitable for use as glues or adhesives, put up for retail sale as glues or adhesives, not exceeding a weight of 1 kg."

Certain adhesive products which we currently supply in 400ml tubes (or smaller) are now subject to an additional tariff upon import into Canada as of July 1, 2018.  As of now, this category of products is subject to a 10% tariff.  Larger package quantities (1kg or larger) are not subject to this tariff.

We are reaching out to those customers we know will be affected by this change, and will work with them to minimize the impact of these new tariffs.

Price Increases

Recently, the US government imposed heavy tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the US, and we’re seeing the impact of these tariffs on some of our products.  Our Continuous Hinge suppliers have already increased prices on certain hinges by as much as 16%, and it’s possible that other suppliers we work with are facing similar cost increases. As of the date of this post, only Continuous Hinge products are affected.  However, as the effects of these tariffs begin to ripple through the US manufacturing sector, it’s possible that some of our other suppliers could also be affected in the coming months. We appreciate your business!  If you’re concerned about pricing in the future, there are strategies you can use to reduce (or remove) the short-term impact of price increases like these.  We’re happy to discuss these options with you.  Call us or reach out using our Contact Form and we’ll set up a time to talk!

Shutter Cam Latch Prevents Accidental Opening and Keeps Dust Out

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Latches, Pawl/Cam Action Latches

southco-e5-shutter-camSouthco has expanded its successful E5 Cam Latch series with a new latch designed to prevent accidental opening. The drop bushing feature of the E5 Shutter Cam Latch adds additional security by preventing the cam from rotating open in high vibration applications.

The E5 Shutter Cam Latch is designed with a spring loaded bushing that covers the driver recess. To actuate the latch, the bushing must be manually depressed. In the event that the latch is not entirely closed, the bushing remains in the depressed position, providing a visual indication that the latch is unsecured.

The E5’s bushing is designed with a longer travel distance, providing enhanced security. With its flush, low profile design, the E5 Shutter Cam Latch provides a clean appearance, minimizing dust and debris collection that may affect operation. The E5 Shutter Cam Latch also meets NEMA 4 and IP65 standards for water and dust protection, as well as EN61373, the shock and vibration standard for railway applications. Southco’s line of E5 Cam Latches delivers robust, vibration-resistant fastening, features a variety of grip lengths and is available in numerous head style options for added security. Additionally, the E5 Shutter Cam Latch features the same panel hole preparation as the standard series and is available with a separate latch and cam assembly to promote modular use. With its spring loaded bushing and visual indicator feature, our newest E5 Cam Latch is designed to keep doors and panels affected by excessive vibration securely closed. The E5 Shutter Cam Latch satisfies industry regulations for water and dust ingress protection, making it an ideal solution for high traffic areas such as floor paneling and enclosures in Transportation and HVAC applications.

Adhesives and the Argo

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Adhesives

Recently, we were called out to a local repair facility for a project that involved an Argo 8×8 ATV.  These ATV’s are known for their durability and versatility, not to mention their ability to operate on land or in the water.

This particular Argo had developed a leak in its inner tub, caused by wear from the tracks rubbing the inside of the wheel well. The hole was a crescent-shaped scar on a rounded part of the tub.  This wasn’t going to be an easy patch job.  They contacted the dealer looking for a solution, but they dealer suggested a sheet metal patch, lots of silicone and rivets.  RIVETS!  They actually suggested making more holes in a machine that is subject to massive vibration.  The owner of the Argo felt this wasn’t a great option and felt it would only create more leaks (and headaches) down the road.

Part of the problem with this application is that the tub of the Argo is made of a type of plastic that is known to be difficult to bond.  Some versions of low density Polyethylene are nearly impossible to bond, and so repair shops often resort to “mechanical” fixes like rivets and silicone.  In this situation, the constant vibration of the machine could have caused the rivets to wear even larger holes in the plastic.  Furthermore, there was no guarantee that silicone would provide a long-lasting seal.

Naturally, they were looking for alternatives.

With the help of our technical experts at ASI, we identified the best adhesive to use on the tub of the Argo is our Maximum Performance 2:1 epoxy, the MP54420.  With its high viscosity formula and 20-30 minute fixture time, it has time to flow into large (and small) gaps, then cure to a hard but flexible finish.

IT GETS BETTER.

This solution gives them some great benefits:

  • We did not have to create more holes in the Argo.
  • We avoided the use of messy silicones, and did not have to cut or shape any sheet metal.
  • The total cost of the repair was less than $100 (including $60 for the re-usable dispensing gun)  and there was adhesive left over.
  • The machine is field-ready within hours.
  • One 50ml tube is enough for multiple repairs (depending on the size of the holes, of course)
  • This epoxy will last through extreme temperature ranges (-60F to +250F) once cured.

This particular project is not going to morph into large-scale business from this particular customer, but it does highlight an application that many might overlook.
