Southco has further expanded its successful line of rotary latching solutions with the launch of two new heavy-duty, paddle-style actuators that provide multiple points of actuation, allowing two connected rotary latches to be activated remotely by one actuator.

Southco’s AC-20 and R3-22 Actuators are constructed from corrosion resistant materials, making them well-suited for exterior applications that require robust performance. Available in polished chrome or black powder-coat finishes, these actuators feature a rugged, contoured paddle design for enhanced grip, key locking security and secure push-to-close functionality.

AC-20 and R3-22 Actuators are an ideal solution for doors and panels that require remote actuation of several connected rotary latches. When opening a large access panel on a piece of Off-Highway equipment for instance, the end user can easily release both latches at the same time by activating one actuator, facilitating operator entry.

With their high-strength, corrosion resistant paddle-style design, Southco’s AC-20 and R3-22 Actuators provide remote release of multiple connected rotary latches for simplified access in challenging environments. When combined with Southco R4 Rotary Latches and AC Cables, these Actuators create a complete Rotary Latching System, providing secure, reliable, remote latching for interior and exterior applications.

Why Touch Points Matter to Automotive Design

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Products

(and why they should matter to your designs, too)

This article was originally posted on Thursday, July 7, 2016 by Rachel Pilgren-Kane.

Whether consciously or sub-consciously, touch points form the foundation for customers to perceive and make decisions regarding the products they choose. Touch points drive the quality of customer experiences, and serve as the basis for the resulting relationship. This is why it is so important to understand the impact that touch points can have on Automotive design.

What Are Touch Points?

A touch point is defined as all of the communication, human and physical interactions your customers experience during their relationship with your products and organization.

Touch points can take many forms – from the sound a car door makes when it shuts to the operating effort needed to access the center console. Touch points form the basis of customers’ perceptions of a business, its brand and level of quality.

Fortunately, Automotive OEMs have the opportunity to shape their experience. By understanding and utilizing Automotive touch points, Automotive manufacturers can directly influence the experience of your customers. Enhanced customer experiences lead to better results for both customer and company, delivering greater brand advocacy, customer loyalty and ultimately, improved sales.

Enhancing Brand Perception

Within the Automotive industry, differentiation is key to building, creating and maintaining a unique selling proposition and the smallest component can often have the biggest impact on the overall design. Knowing where and how the consumer interacts with a product is vital; it may not be the ultimate decision making factor, but if the touch point quality does not meet expectations it will be a contributing factor in the consumer buying process.

A company’s brand image is key—it creates expectations. It defines who they are, how they operate, and what makes them different from their competitors. For Automotive manufacturers, brand is reliant on a number of trustworthy and reliable suppliers that can be depended on from concept development through to production.

At Southco we understand how our products are our customers’ touch points, and we invest heavily in creating proven solutions that provide a quality experience for the end user. Our versatile design and global engineering capabilities support allow us to deliver consistent quality and an enhanced end user experience through touch points that meet your business objectives.

Southco’s relationship with the Automotive industry spans decades of experience and innovation. We manufacture highly engineered access hardware components for a variety of interior and exterior vehicle applications, including glove box, center console and load floor latches, positioning hinges for headrests and armrests, as well as special fasteners for noise shielding and other engine applications, all creating a quality and comfort feel that ensures the ultimate touch point experience.

New Cam Latch Offers Adjustable Grip For Custom Fit

Adjustable E5 Cam Latch from Southco
Adjustable E5 Cam Latch

Southco has expanded its successful E5 Cam Latch series with a new version that provides flexible grip adjustment, allowing a single latching solution to be used for multiple applications. Capable of delivering a grip range of up to 11.5mm, the new E5 Cam Latch with adjustable grip features an extended shaft that allows the cam to be set at a specific grip to tightly secure a door or panel.

The E5 series provides flexibility in grip adjustment to overcome door tolerance inconsistency and permanent gasket setting. For applications with door gasketing which have a tendency to set permanently under a prolonged compressed state, the flexible grip adjustment provided by the E5 corrects this issue by allowing the grip to be readjusted to provide optimal door closing or gasket sealing. The ramp profile of the cam also acts as lead-in to assist door closing, and provides up to 1mm of compression. Tested to NEMA 4 and IP65 standards for water and dust protection, the E5 provides ingress protection and is suitable for use indoors and out.

With deep offset, standard offset, and straight (no offset) options, the latch covers a wide range of grip distances. The metal cam features a plastic cap that minimizes noise when making contact with the keeper, delivering robust, scratch-free engagement with frame and protecting decorated or coated finishes. Additionally, the E5 Cam Latch features the same panel hole prep as the standard series and is available with a separate latch and cam assembly to promote modular use.

With its customizable grip, our newest E5 Cam Latch meets the needs of multiple applications that require the same latch but with different grips, while the flexible design allows the fit to be customized to the specific needs of each application.

will the Canadian countermeasure tariffs affect you?

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Adhesives, News

It’s coming:  The Department of Finance Canada has issued its notice of intent to impose countermeasures in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum products.

On June 1, 2018, the Department of Finance Canada issued a list of countermeasure tariffs which will take effect on July 1, 2018.  These countermeasures targeted a wide range of products which include (obviously) steel and aluminum but also include stainless steel, food products (stock up on ketchup), paper and wood products, household goods, and some types of appliances.

Where the new tariffs affect us (and our customers) is in the area of adhesives in small package sizes:
"HS Code 3506.10.xx.xx:  Products suitable for use as glues or adhesives, put up for retail sale as glues or adhesives, not exceeding a weight of 1 kg."

Certain adhesive products which we currently supply in 400ml tubes (or smaller) are now subject to an additional tariff upon import into Canada as of July 1, 2018.  As of now, this category of products is subject to a 10% tariff.  Larger package quantities (1kg or larger) are not subject to this tariff.

We are reaching out to those customers we know will be affected by this change, and will work with them to minimize the impact of these new tariffs.

Southco has expanded its line of electronic access solutions with a compact electronic actuator that simplifies the upgrade from mechanical to electronic access. The AC-EM 05 Electronic Actuator offers an economical option for achieving electronic actuation of Southco’s R4-05 Micro Rotary Latch series and other mechanical latches.

When connected to an electronic access control device, the AC-EM 05 Electronic Actuator can be used to actuate a mechanical latch to remotely open or unlock a door or panel. With its small profile design and efficient gear motor operation, the AC-EM 05 Electronic Actuator is ideal for concealed applications where physical space constraints are a challenge.

The AC-EM 05 Electronic Actuator can be easily paired with Southco’s R4-05 Micro Rotary Latch series or any other comparable mechanism to provide electronic access control in limited space applications.

Price Increases

Written by Brian Steeves on . Posted in Hinges, News

Recently, the US government imposed heavy tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the US, and we’re seeing the impact of these tariffs on some of our products.  Our Continuous Hinge suppliers have already increased prices on certain hinges by as much as 16%, and it’s possible that other suppliers we work with are facing similar cost increases. As of the date of this post, only Continuous Hinge products are affected.  However, as the effects of these tariffs begin to ripple through the US manufacturing sector, it’s possible that some of our other suppliers could also be affected in the coming months. We appreciate your business!  If you’re concerned about pricing in the future, there are strategies you can use to reduce (or remove) the short-term impact of price increases like these.  We’re happy to discuss these options with you.  Call us or reach out using our Contact Form and we’ll set up a time to talk!
