Installation Failure, or Supplier Failure?

No one wants to admit that they’re wrong.  Certainly, the most difficult conversation a salesman will EVER have with a customer starts with “Did you follow the instructions?” and ends with something even less fun.  Of course, the only reason that you’d be having that conversation in the first place is because a failure has occurred, and you’ve been called in to resolve it.  You’re being called to task because your product appears to have failed.

There are only a few reasons why a drawer slide* might fail.

  1. It is somehow defective, and that defect has caused a failure.
  2. The wrong slide was selected for that particular application.
  3. It was not designed to function the way the customer is using it.

Obviously, defective slides aren’t your fault… your reputable source for slides should be willing to provide an “emergency-level response” and replace them immediately.  The other two potential causes for failure, however, are a little more serious.

If your supplier (whether it’s a distributor or the factory) has had the opportunity to see your application and you somehow still got the wrong part for the job… shame on them!  A good distributor knows where products should (and shouldn’t) be used.  Regardless of what part number the customer asks for, there must be some form dialogue to confirm the suitability of a component for its intended purpose. It’s okay to ask “Is this the best one for me?” and we encourage our customers to do just that. By having that discussion, you can easily avoid scenario #3.

Ask the questions!

WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN A COMPONENT SUPPLIER?

If you don’t have a good relationship with your component suppliers, what are you missing?

  • Does my current supplier know what my company does?
  • Do their customer service people know my name?
  • Do they ask questions like “where is this being used?” or do they ask me to clarify the application?
  • Do they offer any alternatives or choices if they’re available?
  • Does my supplier offer (even encourage) testing with samples?

* …or any product, for that matter.  For now though, don’t get distracted.  We’re talking Drawer Slides.  Think “Drawer Slides”!

Steeves Agencies is a 100% Canadian-owned company and a proud distributor of specialty hardware (and drawer slides) for over 30 years.  We would be happy to review ANY application of slides, latches, hinges or adhesives, and let you know if there are any improvements that you can make.  Just use our Contact form to reach us.  We’ll call you back right away.

Drawer Slides at home!

I just picked up a magazine called “The Family Handyman” at McNally Robinson this weekend. Admittedly, it was the cover that caught my eye: LOADS OF DRAWER SLIDES being used in “lower cabinet rollouts for increased kitchen storage”.  What a great idea, though not necessarily new.  There are all kinds of rollout-type attachments you can get (see Lee Valley or IKEA), but the idea of rolling out the contents of a cupboard (especially the lower ones) is always a great one.

I read the article and realized that the first thing I would do is use bigger (heavy duty) slides.  I realize that there are “kitchen” or “commercial” type slides out there that may be well suited to a kitchen setting but if you’re like me, and “over-engineering” is the norm, then you need something with more load capacity.  Consider this: If you think that your cabinet rollout will generally see no more than 100 lbs of stuff, then build it for 300 lbs!  My kids (I love them dearly) will find a way to use those rollouts as steps to help them reach the chocolate syrup that I’ve hidden in the top cupboard or that special glass on the rack.  Plan for those unintended uses!

Sounds crazy, I know.  When we started carrying drawer slides, the first thing I did was to build a slide-out garbage tray under my kitchen sink.  I used medium-duty slides that were rated for 100 lbs per pair.  I don’t know about you but I’ve NEVER carried out a garbage bag that weighed more than that so I was quite confident that I’d allowed enough margin for “unintended uses”.  Nonetheless, within a week there were complaints about how the slides weren’t working properly. Someone had stepped on the tray and bent the slides while they were extended… no more slide-out tray.

…and no more convenient stepping stool.

Slides aren’t just for Drawers!

A friend of mine showed me this cool link to a project that makes great use of old (think “classic”) style windows.  This project makes great use of a old window as a door on a low-profile cabinet.  Thanks Kevin!
