Hinges
A hinge lets a door, panel, or lid pivot open and closed while carrying the load of whatever it’s attached to. Beyond the basic pivot function, hinges vary by how much weight they carry, how they’re mounted, whether they add torque or damping, and how well they hold up in the environment they’re installed in.
Steeves Agencies carries several hinge types, including standard butt hinges, continuous hinges, and lift-off hinges, along with specialty options like torque and damping hinges.
Common types
- Butt hinges are the standard pivot hinge, mounted at discrete points along an edge. A reliable, economical choice for most doors and panels where continuous support along the full length isn’t needed.
- Continuous hinges (also called piano hinges) run the full length of the panel edge, distributing load evenly and adding rigidity to the panel itself. Useful on longer doors or panels prone to twisting or sagging.
- Lift-off hinges allow the door or panel to be lifted free of the hinge pin without unscrewing anything, which speeds up removal for cleaning, servicing, or replacement.
- Torque and damping hinges hold a panel at any position through built-in friction or resistance, rather than swinging freely. Useful for equipment covers, adjustable panels, or applications where uncontrolled movement is a safety concern.
What to consider when choosing a hinge
- Load capacity. The hinge needs to support the actual weight of the door or panel over its full range of motion, not just when closed.
- Mounting style. Surface-mount, weld-on, and bolt-through hinges each suit different panel materials and assembly methods.
- Material and finish. Stainless steel hinges hold up better outdoors, in marine environments, or in washdown areas than standard steel finishes.
- Motion behavior. Free-swinging, torque-controlled, or damped movement all serve different purposes depending on how the panel needs to behave when released.
- Serviceability. Lift-off styles make sense where the panel needs to come off regularly; fixed-pin hinges are usually fine where it doesn’t.
