Industrial adhesives do more than stick two things together. The right one needs to match the materials being bonded, the strength required, the cure time you can work with, and the environment the finished product will face.

Steeves Agencies carries several adhesive families, each suited to different jobs:

• Cyanoacrylates (commonly known as super glues) cure fast and bond well to plastics, rubber, and metals. A good fit for small parts, quick assembly, and applications where clamping time isn’t practical.
• Methacrylates offer a stronger, more flexible bond than cyanoacrylates and handle gap-filling and dissimilar materials well. Useful where the bonded parts will see vibration, thermal cycling, or some flex in use.
• Threadlockers keep threaded fasteners from loosening under vibration or thermal expansion. Available in different strengths, from removable for parts that need occasional servicing, to permanent for fasteners that should never back out.

What to consider when choosing an adhesive

• Materials being bonded. Plastic to metal, metal to metal, and rubber to plastic all call for different chemistries.
• Cure time and working time. Some jobs need a fast fix; others need time to position parts before the bond sets.
• Strength required. Structural bonds and light-duty tacking are not the same job, and using the wrong strength can cost you later.
• Environment. Heat, moisture, chemical exposure, and vibration all affect which adhesive will actually hold up over time.
• Fastener removability. For threadlockers especially, know whether the joint needs to come apart again someday.
